What Is A Bucket List And Why Should You Create One?
According to Oxford Dictionaries, a bucket list is defined thus: “A number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime.”
Have you ever created a grand plan of how you want your life to pan out? Maybe you say to a friend one evening how much you want to visit California. But visiting California never happens. Or maybe you tell your mom you want to go volunteering in the Philippines, but that never happens. Neither does swimming with dolphins, riding quad bikes in the desert, or visiting the holy sites in Israel. Instead, you spend your weekends lazing around in your gowns, watching Netflix and gorging on junk food.
All the while, other people are out there, crossing things off their amazing to-do lists. Why? Because they have a bucket list. You, on the other, hand have a bucket and a shopping list. Life gets in the way of most peoples’ grand plans and dreams. Work gets in the way. Things pop up. Or, at least that’s what we tell ourselves. But these are just excuses not to do something amazing. And by the time we’re fifty, we’ve achieved hardly anything. We’ve still not swam with dolphins, still not ridden a quad bike in the desert, and still not been to California. And we still don’t even have a bucket list!
A bucket list is one of the most fun things to create. It’s an awesome list of all the exciting things you want to do in your life. Some people go for the really big, extravagant dreams, such as going up into space, while others are a bit more grounded with their lists, and might simply want to get married and move into the house of their dreams.
A bucket list can be as extensive as you want and as unrealistic as you want. Because that’s the point! It’s a list of things you don’t do on a normal everyday basis – and a list of thing you’d probably never get around to doing if you didn’t put them all down into a list. Let’s take a look at a few reasons why you should create a bucket list.
A Bucket List Can Give Your Life A Purpose
One of the things so many of us struggle with is finding our purpose in life. What do we want most out of life? What drives us? What motivates us to get out of bed in the morning and work 10+ hours a day? For a lot of people, writing up a bucket list can help them find their purpose in life. A bucket list, after all, is a list of the things you really want to do. It’s a list of the things that drive you, and it’s a list that corresponds with your values. It’s a list that can reveal your ultimate why.
A Bucket List Is Exciting!
We’re sure you’ve created a to-do list at some point. Maybe you create them each week. But to-do lists aren’t exactly exciting. Usually, they read something like this:
- Clean out the garage
- Email mom
- Pay my taxes
- Clean the bathroom
- Speak to Molly’s teacher
- Go grocery shopping
Boring. And it’s always the same stuff each week. That’s what makes a bucket list so exciting. Whereas a to-do list is full of ordinary, everyday things, a bucket list is full of awesome, extraordinary things.
A Bucket List Gives You Something To Look Forward To
Happiness is having something to look forward to. What do you think about that? Naturally, we all try to make sure we have something to look forward to each week, whether it’s just an ice cream after work or movie night on Friday. But a bucket list gives you something extra special to look forward to in life. As you cross off each item and move onto the next, there is a terrific sense of excitement because you know you’ve got something amazing to look forward to.
Writing Stuff Down Means You’ll Probably Do It
Let’s say you’ve always wanted to host a dinner party, but you still haven’t. Why not? Perhaps it’s because you never wrote it down. Many of us are like this. We find it really hard to take action and do something that’s a bit different unless we’ve written it down in words. We’re not sure why this is. Maybe writing it down makes it somehow more real? Or perhaps it makes us more accountable? Whatever the reason, it works. The power a bucket list holds over you is amazing. Once you write down all the things you really want to do in life and stick the list somewhere you can see it all the time, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you start crossing each item off.
You’ll Come Up With Some Cool Ideas
Until you spend some time creating a bucket list, you won’t know what it is you really want to do in life. If you did, guess what? You’ll have already done it! Creating a bucket list is essentially just like brain storming ideas. And when you brainstorm, you access your unconscious mind. At this point, all kinds of great ideas you’d never thought of before come pouring out! Spend some time creating a bucket list. You’ll be surprised at the stuff that you come up with!
To Make Sure You Don’t Miss Out On Anything
Lastly, you should create a bucket list so that you don’t grow old and realise you never did what you really wanted to do. There is a great quote in Frasier, where Frasier’s dad points out that we don’t regret the things we did. Instead, we regret the things we didn’t do.
A bucket list gives you the chance to write down everything you want to do. Once you know exactly what you want to do and can see it in list form, you’ll be greater motivated to actually go out and do it. That way, you’ve got no excuses for growing old and not having done all that you wanted to do. And that has to be the biggest satisfaction there is.
Stay happy!
