Clouds Illusions Everywhere.

Clouds

The weather has been less than summery this week. I have taken my mothers advice and found that clouds do have silver linings. Despite the wind, there have been an amazing number of beautiful, cloud filled skies. I thought I would share a few that I took on a walk near la Rocque a couple of days ago. Stunning I'm sure you will agree!

I couldn't help singing Joni Mitchell's song 'Both Sides Now' as I was gazing at all the amazing clouds. Here are the lyrics.

Both Sides Now

Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air

and feather canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way.
But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone.
So many things I would have done but clouds got in my way.

I've looked at clouds from both sides now,

from up and down, and still somehow
it's cloud illusions I recall.
I really don't know clouds at all.

Moons and Junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way that you feel

as every fairy tale comes real; I've looked at love that way.
But now it's just another show. You leave 'em laughing when you go
and if you care, don't let them know, don't give yourself away.

I've looked at love from both sides now,

from give and take, and still somehow
it's love's illusions that I recall.
I really don't know love at all.

Tears and fears and feeling proud, to say "I love you" right out loud,

dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say
I've changed.
Something's lost but something's gained in living every day.

I've looked at life from both sides now,

from win and lose, and still somehow
it's life's illusions I recall.
I really don't know life at all.

Needlework.

On Thursdays I volunteer at a Georgian house in St Helier. This week it has exhibited a needlework display in honour of Capability Brown. There will be a needlework workshop on Friday which I'm hoping to attend. I will let you know how I get on!

Reading.

I have recently finished Patrick Gale's 'Place called Winter'. It was thoroughly enjoyable although very poignant. Life in the newly cultivated Canadian prairies with a twist. Set around and just after the First World War it covers a range of emotive topics including homosexuality. Not a dry eye in the house at the end of the story. Be warned.

I am now reading Rose Tremain's 'The Cupboard'. An 87 year old woman is telling her life story to a journalist. Born in the Victorian era we hear how Erica becomes a suffragette and then goes on to become a novelist. Rose Tremain writes in a such a way that transports you to the very events of the story, with great empathy. So far I'm loving every word.

The News

No doubt, like many others, I have been following the news this week with great interest. Now that Theresa May is prime minister how will that pan out in the next few weeks? Our new foreign Minister Boris is an interesting choice. I wonder what Angela Merkel will make of him. My son sent me this picture from the Internet. Not only does it look and act like our own Ebeneezer but the sentiments certainly sum up our situation at the moment. I guess it's a waiting game with everything crossed.

Baking.

My interest in certain activities is very seasonal. Cooking and baking is something I enjoy more in the winter months. Since volunteering at the mill I have regularly made a cake of some sort on Monday evening to take with me on Tuesday. It never seems right to be baking on a sunny afternoon or evening. I much prefer a cosy kitchen with lights on and preferably rain pouring down outside. I know I am an odd one!
This Monday was no different. I had made a point of buying ingredients that I knew were in short supply that afternoon...or so I thought. Tea cooked and washed up I set to baking. Oven on, utensils out. Recipe book to the ready. Feeling smug I laid out all the newly purchased ingredients and looked for the first instruction in the recipe. Mash four bananas! The only ingredient I hadn't shopped for, yes you've guessed was bananas ! Don't you hate setting out late in the evening to the shop. No doubt you heard my groans as I whizzed round the supermarket clutching my bunch of bananas. That will teach me to feel smug.
The banana, coconut and cherry cake ( Nigella , Kitchen ) was delicious when it was finally made!

Hopefully your week has gone well. I look forward to reading all about them as I join Amy for her Five on Friday.
